How to complete 'Visits to the US'

If you were present in the United States prior to coming on your current immigration status listed in the previous section, list your previous immigration statuses in this section.

Your residency for tax purposes is determined by the complete history of all statuses/visits to the US from 1986 onwards, as a student, a trainee, a scholar or a teacher holding an F, J, M, or Q visa, and by the complete history of your US statuses/visits for the last 3 calendar years for all other immigration statuses different to F, J, M, and Q. To add a previous status, use the "Add status" option in this section.

Once you fill out the previous section on Step 1 the system will automatically add one status for your current Visa selected above as the first one. After that you need to click ‘Add status’ for each different Visa held in the US.

You do not need to report each separate physical visit to the US, only the different Visa types held. The start and end dates for each status should not overlap with each other.

However the oldest status added has to have the exact same date for the start as the date you selected on the first question - 'When was your first visit to the US?'.

💡 If you’d like to add previous visits to the US, please click on +Add Status.

🔎 For previous F, J, M, or Q visa statuses, enter initial entry and final exit dates for US visits after 1989. Exclude temporary absences from US for vacation during these periods.
👉 Example: Your 2025 status is J1 - Student, however, you have previously been on F1 - Student status from 2018 until 2022. In “Visits to the US”, please enter the initial entry date in 2018 and the final exit date in 2022 of the previous F1 status.

🔎 Please provide all entry and exit dates for the last 3 calendar years for previous statuses other than F, J, M, or Q.
👉 Example: Your 2026 status is J1 - Student. You previously held a B2 – Tourist visa in 2017, 2018, and 2024. Only the 2023 visit falls within the last 3 years, so enter that visit only. The 2017 and 2018 visits are outside this period and do not need to be entered.

⚠️ If the section “Select if you were out of the US for a full year (01 Jan to 31 Dec) in any of the years listed below” appears, it relates to your immigration status years. If you were in the US even one day during those years, do not select anything and proceed to the next question/section.

➡️ If the “Residency presence days” section is visible, please enter your actual days of presence in the US for the relevant year(s).
